Going to steal an idea from Colin Tappe here and play the “My month in Records” game. Here’s all the “metal” (used loosely) that I bought during July (give or take a day or two). With links to applicable current auctions. Of course most was bought in stores.
- Motörhead - Iron Fist (bronze) / Motörhead - Orgasmatron (gwr)/Motörhead - Rock n Roll(gwr)/ Motörhead - Bomber (bronze pressing)
- What’s to say about the greatest Rock n Roll band ever? Well Bomber has the distinction of being an awesome record that comes in between the band’s 2 best, so you never hear about it. “I’m The Doctor” from Iron Fist is in my top 3 Motörhead tracks ever. Orgasmatron is probably the only cool thing Bill Laswell has ever had his name attached to. Such a weird production job, but it does kind of sound like a giant steampowered train. The lineup is also a bit of an anomaly in the Motörhead world, and I have to say I prefer 1987’s Rock N Roll with Philthy Phil back on the buckets. Rock N Roll also contains Motörhead’s greatest attempted pop-crossover song. Almost every album they’ve done since Eddie Clark left the band has one or two songs that dabble in territory that they really shouldn’t, and usually it’s pretty aweful, but the song All For You, should have been a big summer time hit in ‘87.
- COC - Blind
- This is like if Metallica’s Black album was good.
- Hallow’s Eve - tales of terror
- This has great “drawn in study hall” type cover art. Musically solid power thrash with a D&D type slant.
- Viking - Man of Straw
- Well I admit it. I have pretty low standards for thrash metal from the 80s, but I sincerely believe Viking are a really underappreciated band, though I think Do Or Die is their best work. That said I also sincerely believe I might be alone in my love for them.
- Deep Purple - Machinehead (WB w/ green label & poster)
- Technically this probably falls under classic rock, but then again where would, a band like Judas Priest be without a track like Highway Star. The poster is pretty cool, it’s just got all the lyrics handwritten really big. The gate-fold sleeve is awesome too as it has vintage Martin Birch at work pics.
- Anialator (tx) - 12″ / >Anialator - 2nd 12″ (red vinyl)
- If you read my Metal Monday postings you know I have the softest of soft spots for low grade raw as hell thrash metal. Anialator’s (note: notAnnihilator) first 12″ E.P. Is totally great, sub-sub-sub-Slayer worship with punked out solos, trashy fuzz-tones, and fist banging mosh riffs. Their bassist also did some time in Texas cult-favs Devastation. The 2nd 12″ has some real crummy comic book art on the cover in the vein of The Punisher. Absolutely awesome. Sounds like they couldn’t afford to even rent amps. It’s so basement and cult. Not quite as good as their first but still fun.
- Carnivore - Retaliation test press w/ bio/press sheet
- There was a time when I didn’t get the joke with Carnivore. My apologies. This is one of the best. I mean lyrically, if you can’t laugh at the YEEHAW’s in USA For USA or lines like Home watching Star Trek/Everything’s o.k./Little do I know/Soviet missiles are on the way OR Our intelligence may progress
At geometric rates/Yet socially we remain belligerent neonates, well “there’s something wrong with you”. Riff-wise it’s like a well stocked buffet in here. Dense and delicious. Pretty psyched on the press sheet that came with this.
- Type O Negative - Slow Deep and Hard
- This is actually the lost 3rd Carnivore record. Of course it does open with a 12 minute song that plays like a hybrid of the previous Carnivore record, Sisters Of Mercy, Thergothon, and Kiss, but it’s the best song to sound like that ever
- Metal Massacre 5 - sealed
- Notable basically for being the only official release of any Hellhammer demo songs until the recent reissue. This has Crucifiction from the Satanic Rites session. I probably won’t unseal mine
- Slayer - Captors Of Sin 2xlp boot
- Sold this for about 15x what I paid for it. If you’ve ever heard that Charles Bronson live 7″, they sampled all the banter from here. Honestly the banter is better than some of the music because the guitars are so low on some songs, but on others it’s pretty ripping. ‘84-’86 Slayer tour jam
- Saint Vitus - V (Hellhound pressing)
- Vitus’ last lp with Wino. I may like this one better than Born Too Late actually. Jack Frost is a favorite for the 2 minute Wah-Wah noise solo in the middle. Also when emotion dies is the kind of song that hangs a black cloud over your otherwise nice day
- Possessed - 7 Churches (OG w/ embossed sleeve & inner)
- To me, having the single thing they remember you for when you die, happen by the time you’re 16, seems a cruel fate. Especially if you become paralyzed later in life. Or play second fiddle to Les Claypool. Seriously though, Fallen Angel, perfect opening riff
- Venom - Diehard/Acid Queen b/w Burstin Out
- In the past I’ve covered how these are the 3 best Venom songs, and how this is the most perfectly potent dose of the band you can get.
- Vio-lence - eternal nightmare
- I’ve also covered my distaste for this thing. $41? SOLD.
- Cathedral - Soul Sacrifice/ Cathedral - In Memorium/ Cathedral - Forest of Equilibrium
- Cathedral, by the time you get to Forest of Equilibrium, basically sounds like Celtic Frost on Vanity/Nemesis. It’s a little weird for them to be ex-Napalm Death (and later ex-Repulsion too). But I guess for semi-poppy gothic doom metal they bring a good game. In Memorium is more pure doom-metal, but I don’t really know what I’m supposed to do when I listen to it? Play chess and sip from a chalice? I like Cathedral, but they’re definitely Renaissance Fair Metal.
- Here Lies Venom boxset - sealed
- This thing is sorta cool, but basically dumb, and I’ll gladly take the money I was just paid for it. It contains the first 3 Venom lps, but amended to contain b-sides from the singles off each one, in the midst of the regular track order. WHY? That sort of thing’s just not natural.
