1993 is typically considered a dark time for Hardcore and Punk, and with good reason, basically everything coming out sucked. Straight Edge bands were playing too slow, Grindcore had already peaked, Ebullition style emo was popular, everyone was drowning themselves in their own white guilt. This was a time when people thought Lifetime “Background” was good and mature (it’s neither, duh). I guess Japan and South America were still holding it down, but in my mind I always think how horrible things were for USHC styled stuff. One of the few killer records for that style actually came out of the UK that year, the Voorhees “Violent” 7″. The record sleeve has a picture of one of the demons from Evil Dead 2 on it, and it’s packed with 10 songs, probably in tribute to the Negative Approach E.P. w/ the Exorcist cover. Pretty much if you combined that record with some of the burlier Boston HC from the same time (SS Decontrol, Siege demo, Impact Unit), and maybe a little early Ripcord and Rupture, you’d get Violent. So yes, it lives up to its name. One of the all time great hardcore/punk vocalists is without a doubt Ian Leck barking it out like a hellspawn of John Brannon and Dean Jones (of ENT). He’s still got it too, 15 years later, playing in a few different bands from the UK over the past few years (most recently Meat Locker). I believe this one was run off in a standard edition of 1,000, with some on red on the band’s own “Armed With Anger” label. Definitely hasn’t been in print since the 90’s and at some point people are going to realize that it’s a “must own” and start paying real money for them. Til then I’m filing this under “cheap picks”. If you’ve never heard Voorhees this is a great place to start.
Great band! This record and the the “Spilling Blood” LP are flat out amazing, kind of also remind me of Heresy a little, maybe because they were doing the US hardcore thing (mostly). They kind of lost it for me after they got a new drummer. Didn’t these guys do an east coast tour in the 90’s?
Great band, Great records! One of the all time classic UKHC bands. Their early work, including this 7″ is gold. The first LP, “Spilling Blood With Out Reason”, is arguably better due to a stronger production sound, but they’re both furiously angry charged hardcore. The two demos from around that, compiled on the now out of print Grand Theft Audio compact disc “Smiling At Death”, are also worth checking out. They stand on their own.
There were no copies pressed on red. I believe there were two pressing, and there were more than 1000 copies pressed. I believe there are a few slight variations in sleeves i.e. borders etc.
An interview about record collecting with the singer Lecky can be read here: http://www.endlessquestrecords.com/wordpress/collector-interviews/ian-leck/
Ohh, and AWA wasn’t Voorhees label, it was run by a guy called called Richard from Bradford, and put out a lot of interesting UK bands, including Stalingrad!
thx for the pressing info - i guess i was way off!
my fav. voorhees is actually the “What You See Is What You Get” E.P. on Crust rec. from providence RI. but Spilling Blood, Violent, and the demos are all killer. I need the flexi pressing of the demo actually…
Classic band, all the shit from the first line-up is up there with the best shit of the 90s. The WYSIWYG EP is great, especially that Crucifucks cover. The flexi is pretty shitty quality, even as far as flexi’s go, due to a pressing error that left the grooves super close together so some players mightnt be able to handle it. The layout on the 1st LP is one of my favourites too, even if it is just a SSD rip.
“This was a time when people thought Lifetime “Background” was good and mature (it’s neither, duh).”
amen.
Ah Voorhees! I’m currently doing a new band with Sean the guitarist. early 80s themed so be sure to look out for this when we decide on a name. CC I can prolly get you a flexi if you get in touch we can work a deal out. Ok as far as US tours go the spilling blood line up toured the east coast w/ Hatebreed as support. Two other Voorhees tours have taken place after that with different line ups. Here’s a strange fact. Paul the bass player on spilling blood now resides in Riverside California and Graeme the guitarist in San Francisco. Rumours abound that they are trying to persuade the rest of that Lp lineup to visit in the summer and do a west coast tour!
Here’s the pressing info:
First Press: 1061 (white border on front of sleeve)
Second press: 1,108 (black border on front of sleeve)
Released: 17/4/93
Hope that helps!
