Holy F’n Schnikes. I don’t know where to start with this. Obviously the “buy-it-now or best offer” links are set high so that people will just make their best offer, but $2200 for some Uniform Choice lps. Good lord. Nevermind that this dude claims he owns 3 complete sets. I know I’ll sound like a hater saying this, but I feel like this is one of those people who isn’t even into music and just fetishizes the same 2 or 3 dozen bands. Proof’s in the pudding that they’re looking to buy a copy of Nirvana - Love Buzz, I mean Aneurysm is a jam, but anyone willing to shell out a few grand for one of their records, probably has kinda bad taste. Yeah I said it. Total hater over here. I dunno, Big Cheese is 3th tier Nirvana, and 4th tier Melvins worship. I love Screaming For Change though. Realistically that lot is probably worth $1,000-$1500 maybe as low as $800 actually, although money is certainly no object to this person (which makes them better than the rest of us btw). What a great album though. I wouldn’t mind owning 4 copies. Tell you what, I’d probably trade in half the Nirvana song catalog for another EP of Uniform Choice songs in the vein of Screaming For Change.
Let’s see… then there’s this Fear Of God 7″ on clear, on Temple Of Love records, an In My Eyes test press of their best lp, Demise - Furnace of Tension test… you know this is stupid, all of these are good items and I could talk at length in a normal post about them, but I’m just dumbstruck by the spectacle and absurdity of this listing. I might as well mention the Youth Of Today “Can’t Close My Eyes” 7″ on orange vinyl with the Batman stamp… priced at $700.
It truly never ends with this stuff. Every time you think you’ve seen it all on ebay something pops up that just fries all the logic-circuits in your brain, and you’re sort of left wondering, “What am I doing with myself? Is this what I’m into? Where is this going to end? Who owns at least a dozen copies of Screaming For Change? How can I steal them?”
Do you think the seller even feels fulfillment with any of their vinyl acquisitions? “Yea I have these 2 complete sets of Uniform Choice lps… but it’s just not enough, something’s keeping me up at night. I need to do it again. It’s the only way I can truly live.” Hey don’t forget about his multiple Chung Kings, he’ll be listing one soon.
I hereby promise to be more coherent tomorrow.
Amen, I’m all up for bragging rights but this is true douchery on a “proximo nivel”. This type of “collector” mindset is not unlike kids collecting comic books with foil embossed covers and trading cards with holographic funny-animal-monsters on them.
LB do you even own a record player? ;)
i had a good laugh at this. It’s kinda funny that this auction put the whole Hardcore “collecting” stuff or something, upside down. It’s unbelievable that 5 uc colors, Yes 5 uc colors bundled in one auction can do such damage to collectors eyes, and the fact most people Judge me whilest they don’t know me at all. This being said, i always wanted to end with an auction on here, thank you CC, Thank you Scene police!
Sorry Sebastiaan, nobody meant to irritate you. I should sell my Love Buzz 7 or just trade it straight away.
Cooch Against
I don’t see why people are really that surprised by this auction or why they are so annoyed at the seller. Really, we should be looking at the motivations of the producer, i.e. Wishingwell. They have released so many different colour versions of this record and Im pretty sure they knew full well that limited edition + colour vinyl = extra sales due to people wanting more that one copy. In a capitalist society where mass production is the order of the day it is only a natural response. Maybe this dude knew that in x amount of time the value of these records would quadruple and collected them as they came out? (And hey, where is first press? Is he keeping that one for himself?) We’re pissed, well I am anyway, because whoever is actually going to buy these records is willing to shell out an incredible amount of money on essentially plastic rather than putting out a band’s record/ helping out a venue/putting out a zine etc etc. Bands/labels that put out limited edition stuff should be aware that in the long run they are damaging the scene by dictating where the money is going to go in the future. Then again did Wishingwell know that the population of hardcore kids would grow over time, hence increase demand, or that ebay would come into existence? well no. At the time perhaps it was just a safeguard marketing approach. On the other hand I’m pretty sure Uniform Choice were pretty big from the day they set foot on stage. Bands from the 80s that only put out one press coz no one gave a crap, fine, and if an actually amazing band that didn’t get their dues whilst around, they weren’t to know that hardcore punk was going to explode so no blame here. This is a difficult hot potato to comprehend and I havent really got any answers but I hope i’ve provided some food for thought. Its interesting to see if buying a set is going to be worth more or less than if buying separately. well i said my two pence so will leave it there.
As a p.s remark, when howsyouredge says, ‘given away on tour’ do they actually mean that, which would be incredible for the amounts produced, or sold on tour? I can understand it as a way of increasing sales to make a tour pay its way but seriously what is the story here?
Yes! Let’s blame Wishingwell for their actions 20+ years ago… there’s an idea. I think Wishingwell conspired way back then to press limited colors in hopes to make collectors in future years go nuts and blow loads of cash on their wares and make the OG buyers rich via eBay. *head slams on keyboard*
Asking $2200 for that lot is absurd to say the least. The douche factor is high with this collection, for sure. I’ve owned a few colors of this LP so that’s not coming out of jealousy. At the end of the day if the seller and potential buyer are happy, that’s all that matters. Besides, I’m sure we’ve all spent $2k+ on stupider shit.
that’s not what i was saying. What I meant was that perhaps a good idea at the time in order to make sure all the copies sold has now been abstracted into oblivion through exchange value. i said lets look at the cause of these items coming into existence in the first place, but not to place blame on anyone. rather, to see it as a lesson learned. Its simply symptomatic of the world we live in, a world which sadly has infiltrated the hardcore punk movement in a very successful manner. im an avid collector myself so this isnt some ‘holier that thou’ rant but i have my limits, and well this would be it! The fact remains that whatever this sells for is a huge amount of money that could be spent elsewhere in a more beneficial manner.
